Shivaji Maharaj decided to build a sea fort(Jal durga) to establish his naval force. It was prudent to build it at a safe distance from Siddi Jauhar's hide out "Janjira" sea fort. He found an ideal site at a stony island Kurte off the sea shore of Malvan. Construction work was awarded to Sardar Hiroji Indulkar. On 25th November 1664, Ganesh poojan was done on the Malvan sea shore. A big rock called "Moryacha Dhonda" with images of Ganesh, Shivling, Sun-Moon and Nandi engraved on it, was worshiped. Foundation stone was laid by Shivaji Maharaj himself. The money collected in Surat raid was employed here. Expenditure was around one crore hone (Gold coins). During construction period, Aurangzeb jailed Maharaj at Agra but he rescued himself and returned to Konkan. The sea fort was named "Sindhudurga fort", a ruler of Sindhu Maharashtra. you will get best experience of morning walk.
